About the Group

NewJeans is a girl group under ADOR, a sub-label of HYBE, who debuted on July 22, 2022 by uploading the single "Attention" to YouTube without any prior announcement or showcase — a radically unconventional entry into K-pop. The group's name references denim as a timeless fashion item, while also playing on "new genes," symbolizing a new generation of pop music. Creative director Min Hee-jin, the former visual mastermind behind SM Entertainment's iconic acts, served as ADOR's founding CEO and shaped every aspect of NewJeans' aesthetic, from the Y2K-inflected music to their effortlessly cool image. Their debut EP New Jeans sold over one million copies — the best-selling debut album ever by a K-pop female act.

Debut Story

NewJeans was born out of ADOR, a new sub-label established by HYBE in 2021. At its helm was Min Hee-jin — widely credited as one of the most influential creative directors in K-pop history, having shaped the visual identities of Girls' Generation, f(x), EXO, and SHINee during her years at SM Entertainment. After joining HYBE as Chief Brand Officer in 2019, she was given full creative control to build a group from scratch under ADOR. On July 22, 2022, NewJeans debuted without a traditional press showcase or pre-release hype campaign — the group simply posted "Attention" on YouTube. This stripped-back approach, paired with a Y2K-meets-90s-R&B aesthetic, was entirely unlike anything else in K-pop at the time. Their debut EP New Jeans (August 1, 2022), containing "Attention," "Hype Boy," "Cookie," and "Hurt," sold over 1 million copies — the all-time record for best-selling debut album by a K-pop female act. "Hype Boy" then spent 42 weeks on the Billboard Global 200, the longest run ever for a K-pop female act's song.
