SEVENTEEN
About the Group
SEVENTEEN is a thirteen-member boy group under Pledis Entertainment (now part of HYBE) who debuted on May 26, 2015. Their name comes from the formula "13 members + 3 units + 1 group = 17." The three units — Hip-Hop, Vocal, and Performance — each have distinct creative roles, and the group is renowned as one of K-pop's most fully "self-produced" acts: member Woozi writes and produces virtually all of their music, while Hoshi choreographs their performances. SEVENTEEN set the record for best first-week K-pop album sales at the time with 4.5 million copies for FML (2023), and were the first K-pop act to perform at the UK's Glastonbury Festival (2024).

Debut Story
SEVENTEEN's journey to debut began in 2013 when Pledis Entertainment launched Seventeen TV, a YouTube series documenting their trainees' preparation. In May 2015, MBC aired Seventeen Project: Big Debut Plan, a reality program leading up to their official debut showcase on May 26, 2015, followed by the EP 17 Carat on May 29.
What made SEVENTEEN unusual from the start was their self-production model. Woozi handles all songwriting, composition, and arrangement. Hoshi creates all choreography with the performance unit. Other members attend album production meetings and have genuine creative input — not just advisory roles.
Their debut EP 17 Carat became the longest-charting K-pop album of 2015 in the US and the only rookie album named in Billboard's "10 Best K-Pop Albums of 2015." From there, SEVENTEEN grew methodically into one of K-pop's biggest acts, culminating in FML (2023) selling 4.5 million copies in its first week — a record for K-pop at the time.
